Et voilà, je l'avais prédit (enfin, plutôt espéré que prédit) au mois de février, et voilà qu'on y est.

Voyons voir s'il va faire venir les Taliban à la Maison Blanche, inclure le Koran dans le curriculum des écoles, promouvoir l'avortement, détruire l'économie etc. Tous les autres choses qu'on a fait miroiter...

Je me suis laissé dire que McCain serait pas mal en vice président, mais voilà, on ne va pas demander trop de révolutions en même temps à nos amis d'en face.

Fidèles lecteurs de ce blog vous saurez que je ne suis pas franchement de droite, mais dans la présente situation je ne crois pas que le clivage gauche-droite ait tellement de sens au niveau économique. Voilà 8 ans de droite, et l'économie des US (et du monde entier) est dans une mouise noir. Je ne vois pas comment il pourrait faire pire, mais aussi je ne vois pas comment lui (ou quelqu'un de droit) pourra faire tellement de miracle. Un jour ou l'autre, il faut arrêter d'imprimer de l'argent, et avouer qu'on est mal.

Mais voilà ce que je ferai en premier à sa place, avant de sortir d'Afghanistan, d'Irak, etc. Je fermerai Guantanamo.
Plus : je m'humilierais publiquement, devant le monde entier, et demanderait pardon au nom des US d'avoir bafouer la convention de Genève, d'avoir fait des entourloupes légales pour contourner leur propres lois, d'avoir 'redéfini' la torture et l'avoir autorisé au plus haut niveau. Je demanderais pardon au militaires américains, de les avoir mis ainsi encore plus en danger de représailles du même style, et aux citoyens des US, qui ont vu leur réputation ternie de façon dramatique dans le monde entier.

Quant aux détenus, je ne sais pas ce que j'en ferais. Ceux qui n'était pas radicalisés en arrivant le sont sûrement devenu - enfin, ceux qui n'ont pas été complètement démoli.

Argh, ce monde ! Depuis notre Suisse douillet on a parfois de la peine à comprendre pourquoi on dirait Maranatha (Seigneur, reviens)... mais il n'y a pas besoin de chercher si loin que ça.

So there you go, I predicted it (well, hoped mostly) back in February, and now it's happened.

Let's see if he'll now bring the Taliban to govern in the White House, include the Koran in the school curriculum, promote abortion and destroy the economy (too late for that) etc. And all the other horror stuff that was bandied around...

I think that McCain wouldn't make a bad vice-president, but I guess we can't expect too many revolutions in one go from our friends over the pond.

Regular readers of this blog will know that I'm not exactly right-wing. But in the current circumstances I'm not sure that the left-right divide really makes much difference economically speaking. We've just come out of 8 years of 'right', and the US economy (and the rest of the world) is up that creek. I can't see how Obama could do much worse. But conversely, I don't see how he (or a right-wing politician) can make things much better. Some day you have to stop printing money and admit that things are dire, real dire.

But here's what I'd do, if I was in his shoes, even before drawing out of Afghanistan, Irak and all that. I'd close Guatanamo.
I'd go further, I'd apologise publically, to the whole world, in the name of the US for ignoring the Geneva Convention, for doing legal tricks to work around the laws of the US, for 'redefining' torture, and authorising it at the highest level. I'd apologise to US military personnel, for having greatly increased the danger to them of retaliation-in-kind, I'd apologise to the citizens of the United States for having inestimably tarnished their international reputation and standing.

As for the prisoners, I don't know what I'd do. Those who weren't radicalised on arrival now have every reason for hating the 'great Satan'. Those, that is, who haven't been completely demolished by what they've endured.

Oh, what a world we live in. From the comfort of Swissland, one sometimes wonders why anyone would say Maranatha (Oh Lord, come)... but you don't have to look too far afield.
