Alors me voilà. Le centre de conférence est très joliment aménagé, il y a du café, biscuits, fruits, tout ce qu'il faut (wifi surtout!). La première séance avec Jon Skeet (une célébrité dans le petit monde des développeurs) est terminé. Je suis content d'avoir pu répondre à une question. J'ai aussi rencontré enfin deux personnes que je ne 'connaissais' que virtuellement (un français et un allemand!).

So here I am. The conference venue is very swish, and coffee, croissants, biscuits, fruits laid on. And wifi (the most important!). The first session was with Jon Skeet (a minor celebrity in the little world of programming). I'm also happy to have finally met two people who I only knew virtually (one French, the other German!).

LCY

London City Airport est incroyable. Enfin, pas l'aéroport en lui-même, mais l'atterrissage.
Voler bas par dessus le Thames, les monuments célèbres (que je ne reconnais pas tous), on a l'impression qu'on va voler entre les bâtiments (exemple sur YouTube).

Je me réjouis presque du départ, pour voir comment c'est de jour.

Et j'ai pu marcher depuis l'aéroport jusaqu'à l'hôtel!

Et l'hôtel m'a fait payer £12 pour pouvoir faire du Skype avec mes filles!

 London City Airport is amazing. Or rather, not the airport itself, but landing there is.
Flying low over the Thames, famous landmarks (not that I recognise that many of them), you feel like you're close to flying in between them (found this example on YouTube).

I'm quite looking forward to flying out, to see what it's like in daylight.

And I walked from the airport to the hotel!

And the hotel made me pay £12 for wifi so I could Skype with my delicious daughters!

Leaving ... Sur le départ

Me voilà à l'aéroport encore une fois (GVA), pour la troisième fois depuis début octobre.
Cette fois-ci je suis seul, et je vais ici. J'atterris à LCY - la première fois pour moi. Ce sera aussi la première fois que je prends le DLR. En fait, je crois bien que je ne suis plus retourné à Londres depuis '98.

Une autre première pour moi: je voyage avec un petit ordinateur (pas le mien). Un petit 'netbook' qui ressemble passablement à un que j'ai résisté à la tentation d'acheter il n'y a pas si longtemps (je suis en train de mijoter un billet pour ce blog sur les besoins/désirs/technologie et luxe). Mais voilà le problème: aller à une conférence de programmeurs sans PC c'est comme y aller tout nu (sauf que tout nu je ne suis pas sûr que ça se remarquerait!). Alors j'ai mendié/emprunté à mon ami Nico.

Et me voilà en train de l'utiliser pour la seule chose raisonnable qui aurait justifier un achat: pour rédiger mon blog quand l'inspiration me prend (ou quand je m'ennuie trop pour faire autre chose: l'autre option ici serait d'écrire des cartes de Noël!)

A la base je me suis inscrit pour les StackOverflow DevDays, mais ils ont pris peur et l'ont annulé, me laissant avec un billet d'avion et une réservation d'hôtel sur les bras (non remboursables). Heureusement quelques personnes intrépides se sont lancé à organiser un évènement similaire, les mêmes jours, et un peu près au même endroit. Alors me voilà. Je n'ai jamais assisté à un 'petit' truc comme ceci (80 personnes), alors c'est un peu effrayant - ce sera des vrais callures là bas, je crois, ceux qui ne font que coder nuit et jour. Mais mon but c'est simplement d'apprendre des nouveaux trucs, de me rèinspirer pour l'informatique, et de rencontrer d'autres programmeurs.

Another first, I've got a computer with me (not mine). A netbook computer very similar to one I resisted the temptation to buy a few weeks ago, as it happens (I'm currently ruminating a post about wants/needs/technology and luxury). The thing is, going to a programmer's conference without a computer is pretty much like going naked (except geeks probably wouldn't notice if I was naked!). So I begged/borrowed one off my good friend Nico.

And here I am using it for the only thing that I could reasonably justify having one for - writing my blog when the inspiration comes (or when I'm too bored to do anything else: the current other option is writing Christmas cards!)

I originally signed up for the StackOverflow DevDays, but they got cold feet and pulled out; leaving me with a 'useless' (and non-refundable) flight and hotel booking. Fortunately, some intrepid people put together a similar conference on the same days and fairly near the original location. So here we go. I've never been to a 'small' do like this before (80 people), so it's a bit nerve wracking - we're talking über-geeks here - but my main aim is to learn some new stuff and meet some other programmers.

Walk ... Promenade

Quelques semaines en arrière, on s'est fait une petite ballade à deux avec Rebecca. Avec petite motivation/récompense à l'appui.

A few weeks back, we had a nice little Rebecca & Daddy walk together. With suitable reward/motivational booster on the way.

Un des défis du parent qui veut aérer ses enfants c'est les journées qui se raccourcissent. Il faut se motiver et s'habiller pour sortir aussi dans le noir/sombre. Il y a des jolis couchers de soleil à déguster.

One of the challenges of getting your kids outside is shorter and colder days. You just have to motivate yourself, and dress to suit. There are some lovely sunsets to savour.

Two films ... Deux films

Dernièrement on a vu deux films très différents.

Le premier - Au sud des nuages, je recommande à fond, c'est exactement mon style de film.

Le deuxième - Wild Wild West - est remarquable par le fait que je ne l'ai même pas terminé. Je suis assez difficile dans le choix des films, mais en général, une fois que j'ai commencé, je vais jusqu'au bout. Mais ce film-là était tellement mauvais, c'était gênant.

I watched two very different films this week.

"Au sud des nuages" (South of the clouds) is exactly my type of film - I thoroughly recommend it, though I'm not sure that you'll find it in English.

The second - Wild Wild West - was so bad that I didn't even both to watch it to the end. It was so bad it was almost embarrassing, I cringed for the actors!

Un autre jour, une autre fille, un autre meuble. Maintenant notre cuisine a un banc blanc, pour complémenter les murs rouges.

Another day, another girl, another piece of furniture. Our kitchen now has a white bench, to set off the red(ish) walls.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to (one of ) you...

Chopsticks ... Baguettes

J'ai été inspiré par un steak de cheval à m'essayer à un plat style chinois. Les filles se sont bien amusés à essayer de manger avec des baguettes. Ca avait aussi l'avantage d'en déconcentrer une des ses compliments habituels ("Beurk?! C'est quoi ça? Il y a quoi dedans?").

I was inspired to whip up a little Chinese-style something in our under-used wok (sorry D&L!), the girls had a fun time trying to get some of it in their mouths (which also helpfully distracted some of them from her "Ew! What's that?" routine.
