Lost in translation ... De chair et d'âme

Il m'arrive assez souvent d'être frustré parce que je veux partager une découverte avec des amis francophones, mais ça n'existe qu'en anglais. A tel point que parfois j'essaie de traduire moi-même (avec des résultats un peu mitigés), et j'ai même réussi à faire traduire quelques ouvrages (Adoration et louange dans l'église, Ce que j'aurais aimé apprendre plus tôt, Nous t'attendons! - les trois aux éditions Emmaüs).

Cette fois-ci c'est l'inverse qui m'arrive.

L'autre jour on a regardé le documentaire De chair et d'âme. C'était époustouflant, beau, touchant, exaltant. D'être de la partie lors de la première rencontre et la découverte mutuelle d'Alexandre Jollien et 'Monsieur Intouchable' c'est un privilège et une expérience presque mystique.

Mais alors, allez partager ça avec des anglophones...

I often find myself frustrated when wanting to share an English-language resource with my French friends or acquaintances. So much so that I've sometimes resorted to trying to translate stuff myself (with sometimes-dubious results), and I've actually managed to get several books translated (The Heart of Worship, Bringing Home the Prodigals, What I wish I'd learnt at Sunday School).

But this time, it's the other way round.

Have you heard of the film 'Intouchables'? (If not, you haven't been reading properly).

Have you heard of Alexandre Jollien? Probably not, which is unfortunate, because he's a kind of philosophical & Swiss equivalent of Mr My Left Foot (in the sense that he was considered 'just handicapped' for years, before 'coming out' as a Real Person).

Anyway, the other day we watched a video/documentary of a conversation between the guy who's story inspired Intouchables, and Alexandre Jollien. It was astounding. Really. Amazing to eavesdrop on the mutual discovery and appreciation of two incredible people.

You can read about it in French here, unfortunately I doubt there'll be an English version of the film, and without subtitles, Alexandre Jollien is going to be pretty difficult to understand...
