Long week-end

Actually it was a normal length weekend, but not quite a normal weekend.

I'll explain later...

BBC ... Folie

Got myself 'published' on BBC news website (it's not the first time... ego searcher* confesses). It was quite a witty comment but not as witty as this one.
Just in case it disappears, the other comment was:
Having a smoking section in a pub or restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.

Animal magic ... Ménagerie

Aujourd'hui on a été à l'étranger...

D'accord, d'accord.

Today we went abroad.

Ok, from where we live, going abroad isn't a big deal, but I'm still English enough to get a little kick out of being able to go to a 'foreign' country in a few minutes by car.

We were invited by one of my customers (strictly speaking, an employee of one of the customers of the company I work for*) and we spent an excellent day with him, his wife and their son.

They have a nice house in the countryside with lots of animals for Kalia to discover - a parrot, a dog, a cat, ducks, hens, a horse (as shown) and a pony. She was all eyes (Kalia, that is, not the pony).

And guess what we bought home with us?

Tune in soon to find out...

(* Strange. I haven't kept in touch with any of my ex-colleagues from the company where I worked in the UK for two and a half years - and yet I made friends with one of our customers while in Belgium: in fact he and his family came here on holiday last year!)

Capitalism, awe ...

Those of you who have been following our adventures for a while may remember me buying two cordless phone not so long ago – and doing our part for the global economy. Well, now as far I’m concerned the global economy can jolly well take a running jump!

Because one of the handsets stopped working after a couple of months. So I took them back, got my money back and bought just one phone at the same price (one for the price of two!). So I’m banking on quality this time.

I’m increasingly convinced that this capitalism thing that they keep shoving down our throats is a load of carp. I’m for going back to our grandparents lifestyle – trading skills between friends, recovering and fixing up old stuff, making do, saving up and buying quality long-lasting stuff, or doing without.

But don’t be too strict with me about putting that into practice.

//Yesterday evening I went with some friends to a ‘son et lumière’ concert at Lausanne Cathedral. It was awesome – starting in the dark, with the choir spread around the aisles, and then slowly candles (2000 of them) were lit – starting at the top of the belfry and flowing down into the whole building – following the shape of the columns and arches. And the voices – like the voice of angels, the basses vibrating in your tummy, and the sopranos so crystal clear and pure that you can feel it all the way through you.

Now that’s what I call art.

Car hate ... Haine d'auto

Gngngngn!

  • Mardi : Expertise, raté&nbps;: l'embrayage 'patine'.

    Aaaaargh!

Yesterday morning, all my troubles seemed so far away, I had a nice car worth 5000 CHF.
Yesterday evening, the same car (in the same state), was worth 500 CHF.

    Accident?

    No, MOT!

    Here's how it happened:
  • Monday: garage gets car ready for MOT* - 540CHF to weld a holey exhaust and get the brakeing balanced.
  • Tuesday: fails MOT on splippy clutch.
  • Quote for replacing clutch: 900 CHF
  • Cost of service and timing belt last month: 560 CHF
  • Projected cost of new winter tyres: 500 CHF
  • Sum received from insurance for hail damage: 2020 CHF
  • Price of car when bought (2.5 years ago): 7400 CHF**
  • Value of car in its current state: the best the garage can offer is to take the car in exchange for the Monday's 540 bill.
  • Kilometres on the clock: 139 000
  • Kilemetres driven since bought: 70 000.
  • Citroën Xsara 1.4I hatchback, red.

  • Sometimes I wonder if I'm not 'jinxed' when it comes to cars - how come everyone else seems to be able to keep their bangers going for years, and I have to start over every 2-3 years?

So, tell me what you think - should I fix this car, and hope, or stump up 10 000 CHF for another car (and hope)?

    Or do without altogether?

(* In Switzerland, MOTs are performed by the state, not by garages)
(** 7000 of which was given to us - thank you! Your know who you are.)

    Quiz

Little guessing game for you - what do you think Kalia is looking at? (For the first time in her life - not difficult when you're only 8 months old!)

If you've missed me recently, you may like to know that I'm quite often to be found 'playing' here (sorry, French only).
