Reformation

This pope is amazing !

• Francis is accompanied by eight cardinals handpicked to help him shape a radical programme of reform for the Vatican.
• He has said he wants today's Catholic Church to resemble Francis of Assisi's "church of the poor".
• He wants to use abandoned monasteries and convents to house refugees.
• And he says he wants to see a less hierarchical Church which is less centred on the Vatican.

Almost makes me want to become a Catholic (just a few paltry details to sort out: transubstantiation, immaculate conception, papal infallibility, Assumption of Mary... Funnily enough celibacy of priests doesn't bother me too much).

Amazing ... Incroyable

La semaine passée, la cannule de Rebecca a commencé à se décoller à la piscine. On a fait comme on a pu avec un sparadrap, mais arrivés à la maision, je voulais corriger ça avec quelque chose qui collait un peu mieux. Malheureusement, on a seulement réussi à l'enlever complètement !

Du coup on avait un problème: pas de cannule, et c'est l'heure de manger. On avait trois options, que je lui ai présentées:
- On met un patch anesthésiant, et on attend que ça fasse effet. Entre deux on utilise le stylo à insuline.
- On met deux patchs: un pour le stylo (dans 20 minutes) et l'autre pour la cannule
- On y va franco, tout de suite, juste avec le spray froid.

Je vous laisse deviner ce qu'elle a choisi. Elle est incroyable, et c'est ma fille !
 

The other day, Rebecca's cannula started coming unstuck at the swimming pool. We patched it up as best we could with a plaster, then when we got home, I attempted a rescue job with some stickier stuff. Unfortunately, between her and me, we managed to pull it out, rather than fix it in.

This left us with a dilemma: no cannula, and it's dinner time. The options (as I proposed them to her) were:
- Stick an anaesthetic patch on, wait for it to take effect, and in the meantime use the insulin pen for the meal.
- Stick two anaesthetic patches on, wait 20 minutes and use one for the insulin pen, etc..
- Just wop the cannula straight away, using the cold spray.

I'll let you guess which one she chose - she's amazing, and she's my girl!

Tutenkhamun ... Toutenkahmon

       

On est allé voir l'exposition de Toutenkahmon, qui montre des répliques des trésors, disposés comme ils étaient lors de leur trouvaille il y a même pas 100 ans. Il y a un audio-guide (avec version enfant), et on peut même toucher les éléments exposés. J'aurais bien aimé y passer plus de temps, et Kalia est aussi motivée pour retourner, alors on verra...

We went to see the Tutenkhamun exhibition, which has replicas of all the treasures, laid out as Howard Carter originally found them. There is an audio guide (with a kid's version), and unlike the originals, you can get up close and touch most of the artefacts. I'd have liked to spend more time there, and Kalia is keen on going back!

Solar boat ... Bateau solaire

     

On est allé faire un tour sur un bâteau solaire à Lausanne. Ce n'est pas un moyen de transport très rapide, mais c'était reposant. On a aussi vu ce fou qui faisait du ski-nautique d'un style qui m'était incconu!

A few weeks back we went for a little tour on a solar boat. It wasn't very fast at all, but it was a nice break from hectic life. We saw this guy doing water 'skiing' on a hydrofoil. Very dangerous-looking!

More thieving ... Encore des voleuses!

En téléchargeant les photos de ma caméra, je découvre encore des surprises - surtout celles-ci qui sont assez réussies d'après moi !

En parlant de vol: la semaine passée un idiot de voleur a volé le porte monnaie de Madame, ET la trousse avec tout l'attirail pour mesurer la glycémie de Rebecca. Heureusement qu'on avait un double, et doublement heureux, l'idiot a eu le bon sens de poser la trousse à un endroit où quelqu'un a pu le trouver.

Downloading the photos of my camera, I discovered some new surprises. Not bad, in my opinion.

Talking of thieving, some clever dick decided to pinch Madame's purse AND the little bag with Rebecca's blood sugar test kit in. Fortunately we had an extra kit, and also fortunately, the thief in question left it somewhere where it could be found and returned to us.

First gig ... Première

 Début novembre je jouerais mon premier culte pour l'église anglaise à Lausanne - sur cette bête !

C'est tout autre chose que l'orgue où j'ai répété jusqu'à maintenant, mais je me réjouis. Pour cette première fois, ce sera 'sans les pieds'.

 I've been asked to fill in for an organist at the Anglican church in Lausanne, at the beginning of November.

It's a slightly different league to the one I've been used to practicing on, but at least this time I have a key and can practice when I want.

The first service will be 'without pedals'...
