Ford Focus

A few gripes after a couple of month's ownership:

- I had to buy a second key (it came with just one normal key and the 'garage' key)
- You have to have Braile-level sensitivity in your finger tips to be able to find the buttons on the key remote. This is especially annoying as they were fine on the previous model.
- The averaged fuel-consumption is over something like a 1000km, so not much use for tracking how your doing over a given day.
- SYNC. I still can't see the point. I really can't. Why would I want to talk to my car? I can see the point of my car being able to phone home in case of an accident, but give it a SIM-card slot, don't make me carry a bluetooth telephone (I don't have one, thanks)
- Why is the little 'gear' logo next to the radio on, permanently? Nobody can tell me. Maybe it's my fault for going through an independent garage who doesn't dare 'shake' the Ford dealership for answers, but it bugs me that I haven't got any way to contact a Ford engineer to get decent answers: like what the torque curves look like for each gear (still trying to work out the sweet spots), what the range the fuel-consumption smoothing is set to, and WHY ON EARTH you have to 'turn' the lights on in order to do full-beam when they turn themselves on automatically when you start the car. (And how on earth you're supposed to work that out on your own).
- The door protection thingies are cool, but had them already break twice: people have this annoying habit of holding the door exactly where the thingy is, which prevents it from retracting while closing, and rips it off. Only 12 quid to replace, but...

Arrrghgm!

Home from work, turn on the computer.

56 unread emails.

By the way, if you're reading this and sent me a mail today, you are definitely a culprit. My problem is all the mails from people (or computers) I've never met!

Losing the war

What do you get if you mix Syria, spiritual warfare and Lord of the Rings?
There are two enemies in The Lord Of The Rings.  The first one is the Dark Lord, Sauron, in his tower of BaradDûr.   Sauron wants to subdue all opposition to his will in Middle Earth.  He can be and must be withstood by sword and bow, but sword and bow cannot deliver final victory over him.  The other adversary is the Ring of Power.   The Ring whispers to you on the inside, telling you of all the good you could do, all the wrongs you could right, if you’d just slip in onto your finger and claim it as your own.  The Ring cannot be defeated by force, but only by humility and ascesis. “This kind cometh not out save by prayer and fasting.”

Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity

This doesn't seem like a hoax, even though I haven't seen it reported on 'mainstream' news sites.
"We regret to inform you that some of our former co-workers are telling us, categorically, that contrary to the claims of your administration, the most reliable intelligence shows that Bashar al-Assad was NOT responsible for the chemical incident that killed and injured Syrian civilians on August 21, and that British intelligence officials also know this."

Mirador

This year for our wedding anniversary, we decided all four of us would go out for some posh nosh. Having been to a wedding in the afternoon, we already had our glad rags on.

Rebecca qui joue à la riche.
Rebecca does the posh thing very well.

Contentes d'être ensemble.
Smiles all round.

Kalia étudie le menu avec attention...
Kalia studies the menu...

... et nous prend en photo.
... and takes photos of us.

In the end she opted for scampi, and made quite a good job of it.

Rebecca asked for pasta, but I ended up eating most of it because it was a bit hard (not 'al dente' - I'm not good at doing the posh thing and sending below-par stuff back to the kitchen).

Rather a 'spensive place, the food is nice (except for the aforementioned pasta, and the strawberry icecream that was actually rather tart raspberry icecream), but you pay mostly for the service, and the view!

Syria, again

If only there were more journalists like this:

"I want to go on record as saying that this is the stupidest, most irresponsible action a diplomatic mission like ours could get itself involved in, and that we've started a series of these things that will never end."

Thieves ... Voleuses

Looks like someone's been having fun stealing my camera to take photos!
