Square one ...

Well, I'm back home.

Bad luck continued. Punch-drunk from lack of sleep (a 22 hour day), I set my alarm wrong and it didn't go off. And the hotel staff forgot to do a wake up call.

At 5h40 I jumped out of bed in record time and record stress.

I went to the airport ASAP, where I tried to find out what chance I had of Swiss flying me back home directly if I didn't make the connection. The lady at the desk just said "go and you'll find out when you get there". Not greatly helpful, but then there was only 30min left before the flight left.

At the baggage counter, the people were more helpful, they listened to my tale of woe, and confirmed that there was not much chance of me getting from London City to LHR in time. They suggested I wait to see if any places were freed up on the 7h30 direct to Heathrow. So I did, but there wasn't. So I took the train home.

The train had barely left the station when I got a text from Dad saying maybe he could get me a later flight to Nairobi/Dar.

So the second I got home (where the girls had only just got out of be), I started negotiating with Swiss for another flight to Heathrow - reserved one for 15h15, which gave me enough lee-way for the 20h onward flight to Nairobi, arriving 9h30 tomorrow (Sunday) morning.

I'd just put down the phone when Dad told me that actually, I was just first on the waiting list for the flight, and it was 'almost sure' that someone wouldn't turn up.

Not great.
Or I could upgrade to business class for 500 quid.

Another call to Swiss to ascertain whether if I didn't get a place on that flight, they would be flexible and let me come back directly, and not wait for my official return flight next week. Yes.

This is the kind of thing that could only happen to a pessimist!

I think I'm going to go for it all the same. So, off again in two hours (train this time), so a few more moments with the family...

I'm so knackered I'm not sure what I'm doing, I've just realised I must have binned all my passport photos in the train, when I was trying to 'tidy up' my accumulated clutter.

Yeah, well ... Ouais, enfin

Well, it didn't happen, I'm still in Geneva, in the Crown Hotel Plaza, trying to work out if I can get from London City airport to Heathrow in time to get on the flight for Nairobi & Dar.
It's not looking good. And my credits for the internet in the hotel are running out.

And it's three in the morning
And the taxi leaves for the airport at 5.

Big trip ... Grand tour

Me voilà parti pour un grand tour.

Just took off for the big trip (this post pre-recorded!).

Photoshoot ... Pinup

It's not easy to get them both looking at the camera and not being silly or pulling faces.

Blonay-Chamby 4

I thought this was for digging tunnels at first. And it is, but tunnels in the snow. More here, here or here.

The people who make this place tick all dress up in period costumes, and their kids too.

Un petit casse-croûte dans un ancien wagon.

Having a quick snack in an unoccupied carriage.

I liked this guys grizzly face, and thought he looked remarkably similar to a familiar old blues guitarist.
