  • J'avais mes lunettes 'cool'

Quelle souffrance...

Here, as promised, is a photo from our trip on the lake this weekend.

The careful observer will notice that:
  • The weather was excellent
  • I wore my 'cool' shades
  • I wore my pink shirt (Yves Saint Laurent, I'll have you know)
  • I'm getting a bit too jowly
  • In the right light, the grey hairs don't show up on photo!
For the impatient readers who don't see what this has to do with a bath, the answer is - nothing!

The bath story is that as I mentioned a while ago, I'm partial to a good soak now and again. And for the last two weeks this has been my sole ambition - a fairly modest one methinks (methought). But nope, somehow something always crops up and I still haven't had the time (there is the slot from 11 till 7 in the morning, but I try to sleep then).

Just another of life's little frustrations...

Red nose day ... nez rouge

...Sorry for the gap - it was a busy weekend.

Sunday we made the most of the good weather and did a tour of this end of the lake (by boat, not car). The sun was shining bright, and obviously (it having snowed only a few weeks ago), we didn't think about sun tan lotion or anything like that. So we all came back with bright red noses (except Kalia, who had been dutifully kept in the shade).

Took a couple of photos too, which I shall be sharing with you shortly.

Regression

(In my list of things I like, I mentioned the greenness of spring, this photo is a good example of what I mean.)

I haven't talked about Kalia and her universe for quite a while: After a couple of weeks where things seemed to be going well - sleeping in her own cot etc, there seems to be a slight regression over the past few weeks. It would be nice to be able to blame it on our trip to Italy, but it started beforehand.

We're not too sure how to handle it, haven't got the energy to trawl through all those books we bought! At the moment we're winging it on intuition (feminine, mostly), pending our next visit to the lady who knows (pediatrician).

We have friends coming to stay for a 'holiday' this weekend; I wonder whether they realise what they've let themselves in for!

(Little plug here for Make Poverty History. I know I've already mentioned it, but I would really encourage you to sign up and do what little they ask. I don't know whether they'll be able to pull it off, but they've certainly managed to line up a lot of big names, so hopefully at least they'll get noticed. I personally think that world poverty is THE issue of our time, and that our descendants will look back on our passivity on this issue, the way we look back on our forefathers complacency over slavery)

Toscana 2

(Suite des aventures)

Jeudi (suite) : discuter, discuter, manger (trop), dormir (enfin!)

(Following on from yesterday)

Thursday (pm): talk, talk, eat (too much), and to bed (at last!)
Friday: Blair elected for a third time - I ponder the fact that 100 years ago, this news would have taken at least a week to get here. Apart from that, I'm not sure what to think.
Evening, visit to see la famiglia: traffic jams on the motorway + talk, talk, eat (too much), return at 1 in the morning, pinching myself all the way so as not to fall asleep.
Saturday: K wakes up at 5 in the morning, and isn't tired anymore. Mamma manages to persuade her to hold off till 7, at which point Daddy takes over and carries her around for an hour or so, then swap again and I sleep till 11!
Invited out for lunch to a family where she is English, he American. There is also the son + future daughter-in-law (Romanian). I love this mixing of cultures.
(Talk, talk, eat (too much) all the same!).

Toscana

01h00 Mme me réveille, me file K et va se doucher.
02h00 espresso + départ direction Gd. St. Bernard
11h45 arrivé, discuter, discuter, manger (trop), dormir (enfin!)

(Did you know that you can see a bigger version of each photo if you click on it?)
Contrary to what I posted yesterday, I’m not going to retro-post our journey under last Thursday, as I don’t want to confuse too many readers. So I’ll just paste it in here (for the technophiles amongst you, I wrote it on my Palm during the weekend – shows that I’m in serious danger of becoming a blogaholic!)

The journey there went like this:
(Wednesday evening) 21.30 I’m asleep, K finishes her feed, Mme packs the suitcases.
01h00 Mme wakes me up, plonks K next to me, and goes for a shower.
02h00 espresso + set off southwards to Grand St. Bernard tunnel
04h05 K wakes up, we stop in a truck dormitory in the Aosta valley. Never seen so many stars
04h35 Set off again: K has a job going back to sleep and wails a bit. Usually we’d think she was still hungry, but decide to try it on. She goes to sleep, and Mme too (about time, she’s been up since 06.50!)
07h30 near Bologna, K wakes up again, spends a while looking at her Mamma dozing next to her, before deciding it’s time to make herself heard. We stop at the ‘Autogrill’ for nappy-change, loo-stop, coffee-break and baby-feed. (Do you want to know the difference between Italy and the UK? In Italy, even in a motorway café, everyone stops to ooh and aah at your baby, and we even got a free pain-au-chocolat just because our baby is cute!)
08h45 Set off again; the winding stretch between Bologna-Florence which I usually do rally-style is full of traffic, roadworks and long queues.
11h45 Arrive, talk, talk, eat (too much), and to bed (at last!).
